Which girl group recorded “We Are Family,” the 1979 disco hit written by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards?

The story behind the answer

Sister Sledge recorded “We Are Family,” the 1979 disco hit written by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.

The song was produced by Rodgers and Edwards of Chic for Sister Sledge, a Philadelphia group made up of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kathy and Kim Sledge. Its celebratory lyrics and instantly recognizable chorus made it one of the defining anthems of the disco era.

Released in 1979, “We Are Family” reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the US dance and R&B charts. The song later became associated with family unity, community events and sports celebrations.

The title can cause confusion because Chic wrote and produced the record but did not perform it. The vocal group was Sister Sledge, whose family relationship was central to both its name and its public identity.
