Answer
Forbes' Quarry
Which Gibraltar cave yielded a Neanderthal skull in 1848? Forbes' Quarry yielded the skull, now known as Gibraltar 1.
Captain Edmund Flint of the Royal Navy discovered the adult female skull during quarrying in 1848 and presented it to Gibraltar’s scientific society on 3 March that year. It was only the second Neanderthal fossil ever found, but its importance was not recognized immediately.
The skull attracted wider scientific attention in 1864, after the discovery of more Neanderthal remains in Germany’s Neander Valley. Charles Lyell and Hugh Falconer arranged for Charles Darwin to examine it at home; Darwin reportedly called it “wonderful.” The specimen’s age is uncertain because it was found without reliable stratigraphic information.
Forbes' Quarry is named after Forbes' Battery, an 18th-century military installation above the cave. It is often confused with other Gibraltar caves, including Gorham’s Cave, which is famous for later Neanderthal occupation and evidence of their survival in Gibraltar.
