Which full-sided team sport is included in the Glasgow 2026 programme?

The story behind the answer

Netball is the full-sided team sport included in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games programme.

The scaled-back Games programme includes netball alongside athletics, swimming, track cycling, artistic gymnastics, boxing, judo, weightlifting, bowls and 3x3 basketball. Netball is the only full-sided team sport on the list; cricket, field hockey and rugby sevens were omitted.

Netball’s Commonwealth Games history began with a demonstration appearance in 1990, before it became an official medal sport at Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Australia has been the most successful nation in the competition, while England became the first team outside Australia and New Zealand to win the gold medal, in 2018.

The distinction matters because Glasgow will also stage 3x3 basketball, but that is a short-sided format rather than a conventional full-sided team game. Glasgow 2026’s netball tournament is planned as a 12-team women’s competition at the OVO Hydro.
