Which four biblical chapters contain the main Genesis account of Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

The main Genesis account of Noah’s Ark is contained in Genesis chapters 6–9.

Genesis 6 introduces Noah, the decision to send the flood, and instructions for building the Ark. Genesis 7 describes the animals entering, the onset of the flood, and the rising waters. Genesis 8 follows the recession of the waters, the birds, Noah’s departure, and his altar. Genesis 9 records the covenant and its rainbow sign.

These four chapters form the standard biblical flood narrative in the Book of Genesis. They include repeated time markers and some changes in terminology, which have led scholars to discuss how the text was composed and edited. Regardless of those scholarly debates, chapters 6 through 9 are the conventional location for the complete account.

The story is not confined to one short passage about the boat. Its themes include judgment, survival, sacrifice, covenant, and the renewal of life. Later biblical books and many cultural retellings refer back to this four-chapter narrative.
