Where does Genesis say Noah’s Ark had a door?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark had a door in its side.

Genesis 6:16 gives construction instructions for the Ark and says, in common English translations, “set the door of the ark in its side.” The same verse mentions compartments and a window, presenting the vessel as an enclosed structure with an organized interior.

The side-door detail is easy to overlook because many artistic depictions focus on the Ark’s animals, roof, or upper opening. The verse does not specify which side, how large the door was, or what mechanism was used. It simply locates the entrance in the Ark’s side.

The following chapter says Noah, his family, and the animals entered the Ark before the waters rose. Genesis 7:16 then says the Lord shut Noah in, a statement that adds theological meaning to the practical entrance described earlier. The location of the door remains a straightforward construction detail in the text.
