Which Formula 1 driver won World Championships with Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and Maserati?

The story behind the answer

Juan Manuel Fangio won Formula 1 World Championships with Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and Maserati.

Fangio’s five titles came in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957. His championships were spread across four different manufacturers, a record that reflects both his adaptability and the changing competitive landscape of 1950s Grand Prix racing.

Fangio won with Alfa Romeo in 1951, Mercedes-Benz in 1954 and 1955, Ferrari in 1956, and Maserati in 1957. The Mercedes team did not compete in 1956, so Fangio moved to Ferrari before returning to Maserati for his final championship.

A common mix-up is confusing Fangio’s four championship-winning marques with the number of teams for which he competed. His five titles also made him the benchmark for drivers such as Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher until Schumacher surpassed the total in 2003.
