Which Formula 1 driver won the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix in 2008?

The story behind the answer

Fernando Alonso won the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix in 2008 for Renault.

The race was Formula 1’s first night Grand Prix and was held on the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Alonso started 15th after a qualifying problem but won after Renault teammate Nelson Piquet Jr. crashed, bringing out the safety car and changing the strategic order.

Felipe Massa had started from pole position for Ferrari, but a pit-lane incident during the safety-car period dropped him out of contention. Alonso benefited from the disruption and maintained the lead to take Renault’s first victory of the 2008 season.

The event later became associated with the 2008 “Crashgate” controversy after Piquet said his crash had been deliberately arranged. The result itself remained officially recorded, and Alonso remained the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix winner.
