Which Formula 1 driver won the 2016 World Drivers’ Championship before retiring from racing?

The story behind the answer

Nico Rosberg won the 2016 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship before retiring from racing.

Rosberg defeated his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton by five championship points. He finished second at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a result that secured his first and only drivers’ title.

The championship was especially significant because Rosberg became the second son of a Formula 1 world champion to win the title. His father, Keke Rosberg, had won the 1982 championship for Williams. The Rosbergs therefore became the second father-and-son world champion pairing after Graham and Damon Hill.

Only five days after winning the title, Rosberg announced his retirement from Formula 1. He left with 23 Grand Prix victories and one world championship, ending a career spent largely in competition with Hamilton.
