Which Formula 1 driver won the 2009 World Drivers’ Championship in the debut season of Brawn GP?

The story behind the answer

Jenson Button won the 2009 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship in Brawn GP’s debut season.

Brawn GP was formed when Ross Brawn purchased Honda’s Formula 1 team before the 2009 season. The new team produced the BGP 001, which used a Mercedes-Benz engine and an innovative double diffuser that helped generate aerodynamic downforce.

Button won six of the first seven Grands Prix, creating a large early points lead. His form later became less dominant, but consistent finishes allowed him to retain the advantage over Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and teammate Rubens Barrichello.

The 2009 championship was Button’s only Formula 1 drivers’ title. Brawn GP also won the constructors’ championship in its only season before Mercedes acquired the team for 2010.
