Which Formula 1 driver won the 2005 World Drivers’ Championship with Renault at age 24?

The story behind the answer

Fernando Alonso won the 2005 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship with Renault at age 24.

Alonso secured the title at the Brazilian Grand Prix, three races before the end of the season. His consistency and seven victories allowed him to beat McLaren driver Kimi Räikkönen in the championship standings.

The championship ended Michael Schumacher’s five-year sequence of drivers’ titles, although Schumacher and Ferrari remained major figures in the sport. Alonso’s success also made him Renault’s first Formula 1 world champion and the youngest champion in the sport at that time.

Renault won the constructors’ championship in 2005 as well. Alonso successfully defended his drivers’ title in 2006, again racing for Renault and defeating Schumacher in the final season of their championship rivalry.
