Which Formula 1 driver won the 2005 World Drivers’ Championship, ending Michael Schumacher’s five-year title streak?

The story behind the answer

Fernando Alonso won the 2005 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship, ending Michael Schumacher’s five-year title streak.

Alonso drove for Renault and won seven of the 19 Grands Prix. He secured the championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix with two races remaining, becoming the youngest world champion at that time at age 24 years and 59 days.

His main rival was McLaren driver Kimi Räikkönen. Alonso’s Renault was generally strong and reliable, while Räikkönen suffered several mechanical failures despite winning seven races himself. Alonso finished the season with 133 points.

Alonso retained the title in 2006 after another close battle with Schumacher. Sebastian Vettel later surpassed Alonso’s age record in 2010. Alonso remains one of only a small number of drivers to win championships with Renault.
