Ayrton Senna won the 1990 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship after defeating his McLaren teammate Alain Prost.
Senna and Prost had been teammates at McLaren in 1988 and 1989, but Prost moved to Ferrari for 1990. Their rivalry continued as a championship contest, with Senna driving the McLaren-Honda MP4/5B and Prost leading Ferrari’s challenge.
The title was decided at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. Senna started from pole, while Prost was alongside him on the front row. The two collided at the first corner, retiring Prost and leaving Senna to secure the championship.
Senna’s 1990 crown was his second Formula 1 title. He won a third championship in 1991, also with McLaren, before moving to Williams for the 1994 season.
