Keke Rosberg won the 1982 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship despite taking only one race victory.
Rosberg’s sole win came at the Swiss Grand Prix, held at Dijon-Prenois in France because Switzerland had banned circuit racing. His consistency was decisive: he regularly finished near the front while several rivals lost points through mechanical failures, injuries or disqualifications.
Rosberg finished the season with 44 points, three ahead of Didier Pironi. Pironi had scored more points on the track but missed the final races after suffering serious injuries in qualifying for the German Grand Prix. Alain Prost and John Watson were also championship contenders during the season.
Rosberg’s title is a classic example of how the championship rewards total season performance rather than wins alone. He drove a Williams-Ford FW08.
