Which Formula 1 driver won his debut World Championship Grand Prix at the 1961 French Grand Prix?

The story behind the answer

Giancarlo Baghetti won his debut Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix at the 1961 French Grand Prix.

Baghetti drove a Ferrari 156 at Reims-Gueux and defeated Dan Gurney by a very small margin. He became the first driver to win his first World Championship Grand Prix start, a record that remains one of the most unusual achievements in Formula 1 history.

His victory was part of Ferrari’s strong 1961 season, when the team’s powerful V6-engined 156 dominated many high-speed circuits. Baghetti’s race was especially notable because he was competing as a private entrant supported by the Italian Federation rather than as one of Ferrari’s established full-time works drivers.

Baghetti also won two non-championship races shortly afterward, reinforcing the impression that he was a major new talent. However, he never won another World Championship Grand Prix. His career later included drives for ATS, Brabham and other teams, but the Reims victory remained his defining Formula 1 result.
