Which Formula 1 driver was the youngest World Drivers’ Champion when he won the 1972 title?

The story behind the answer

Emerson Fittipaldi became the youngest Formula One World Drivers’ Champion by winning the 1972 title at age 25.

Driving for Team Lotus, the Brazilian won five Grands Prix in 1972, including races in Spain, Belgium, Britain, Austria and Italy. His consistency and victories gave him a commanding championship result over Jackie Stewart.

Fittipaldi was 25 years and 303 days old when he secured the championship, surpassing the previous age record held by Jim Clark. The mark stood until Fernando Alonso won the 2005 title at a younger age.

The record is often confused with the record for youngest Grand Prix winner, which belongs to Max Verstappen. Fittipaldi’s distinction concerns the drivers’ championship, not an individual race victory.
