Which Formula 1 driver was the youngest Grand Prix winner before Max Verstappen broke the record in 2016?

The story behind the answer

Sebastian Vettel was the youngest Formula 1 Grand Prix winner before Max Verstappen broke the record in 2016.

Vettel won the 2008 Italian Grand Prix at Monza aged 21 years and 74 days. Driving for Scuderia Toro Rosso, he also became the youngest driver to take pole position at that race, which was held in wet conditions.

Vettel’s victory was Toro Rosso’s first and remains one of the most famous surprise wins in modern Formula 1. He led from pole and controlled a race affected by rain, becoming the youngest winner at the time.

Max Verstappen replaced Vettel in the record books by winning the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix aged 18 years and 228 days. Vettel later became a four-time World Champion with Red Bull.
