Robert Kubica became the first Polish driver to win a Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix.
Kubica drove for BMW Sauber and started the race from second on the grid. He avoided the pit-lane collision that eliminated Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen, then passed teammate Nick Heidfeld during the pit-stop sequence. Kubica took the chequered flag ahead of Heidfeld, giving BMW Sauber a one-two finish.
The victory was also Kubica’s first Formula 1 win and his only Grand Prix victory. It made him Poland’s first F1 race winner and temporarily placed him at the top of the 2008 Drivers’ Championship standings. Hamilton ultimately won that year’s title for McLaren.
Kubica’s career was later interrupted by serious rally injuries, but he returned to Formula 1 in 2019 with Williams. His Canadian victory remains the defining result of his F1 career.
