Which Formula 1 driver set the record with 14 pole positions during the 1992 season?

The story behind the answer

Nigel Mansell set the Formula 1 record of 14 pole positions during the 1992 season.

Driving the dominant Williams FW14B, Mansell took pole at 14 of the season’s 16 Grands Prix. He converted nine of those poles into victories and won the World Drivers’ Championship with 108 points.

Mansell’s 1992 campaign was one of the most commanding seasons in Formula 1 history. He won the first five races consecutively and secured the title at the Hungarian Grand Prix, four races before the season ended.

The record was later equaled by Sebastian Vettel in 2011, when the championship calendar contained 19 races. Mansell’s achievement therefore remains notable both for its total and for being produced across a much shorter 16-race season.
