Which Formula 1 driver secured his seventh World Drivers’ Championship by winning the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix?

The story behind the answer

Lewis Hamilton secured his seventh World Drivers’ Championship by winning the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix.

The Istanbul race was the 14th round of the 2020 Formula 1 season. Hamilton started sixth on a wet, slippery track but managed his intermediate tyres carefully and won by more than 30 seconds over Sergio Pérez. The victory gave Hamilton enough points to clinch the championship with three races still remaining.

Hamilton’s seventh title equalled Michael Schumacher’s then-record total. He had previously won championships in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The 2020 crown also completed an extraordinary run in which Hamilton won six titles in seven seasons from 2014 through 2020.

A common mix-up is confusing the Turkish Grand Prix with the 2020 season finale in Abu Dhabi. Hamilton’s title was mathematically confirmed in Turkey, while the Abu Dhabi race was won by Max Verstappen.
