Which Formula 1 driver scored his first Grand Prix victory at the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix?
Answer
Gilles Villeneuve
Answer
Gilles Villeneuve
Gilles Villeneuve scored his first Formula 1 Grand Prix victory at the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix.
Villeneuve won at the Circuit Île Notre-Dame in Montreal on 8 October 1978, driving for Ferrari. The race was the first Canadian Grand Prix held at the Montreal circuit, which was later named the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in his memory.
He benefited from the retirements of several front-running competitors but drove a controlled race to take Ferrari’s first victory in Canada. The result was especially meaningful because Villeneuve was born in Quebec and became a major Canadian sporting figure.
Villeneuve won six World Championship races during his career and was renowned for spectacular speed and fearless wheel-to-wheel driving. His career ended after a fatal qualifying accident at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, but his 1978 Montreal win remains one of the defining moments in Canadian Formula 1 history.
