Stirling Moss holds the Formula 1 record for the most Grand Prix wins without winning the World Drivers’ Championship.
Moss won 16 World Championship Grands Prix during his Formula 1 career, but never captured the drivers’ title. He finished runner-up four times, in 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958, and placed third in 1959 and 1961.
His closest title challenge came in 1958, when he lost to Mike Hawthorn by a single point. Moss had more wins than Hawthorn that season, but Hawthorn’s greater points total secured the championship under the scoring system then in use.
Moss drove for several leading teams, including Mercedes-Benz, Maserati, Vanwall and Lotus. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers never to win the Formula 1 title. Later drivers have accumulated more victories overall, but Moss remains the record-holder for wins without a championship.
