Which Formula 1 driver holds the record for the most fastest laps in World Championship races?

The story behind the answer

Michael Schumacher holds the Formula 1 record for the most World Championship fastest laps, with 77.

Schumacher set the record during a career that included 91 Grand Prix victories and seven World Drivers’ Championships. His fastest laps came across multiple eras, from his Benetton years to his dominant Ferrari period and later Mercedes return.

A fastest lap is the quickest lap recorded by a driver during a Grand Prix. Before 2019, it generally had no direct championship-points reward, although it remained an important indicator of race pace.

The statistic is separate from pole positions, race wins and laps led. Lewis Hamilton is Schumacher’s closest modern statistical rival in several categories, but Schumacher’s fastest-lap total remains a distinct record.
