Which Formula 1 driver became the youngest pole-sitter at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix?
Answer
Sebastian Vettel
Answer
Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel became Formula 1’s youngest pole-sitter at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.
Vettel took pole position for Toro Rosso at Monza on 13 September 2008, aged 21 years and 72 days. The achievement was remarkable because Toro Rosso was a smaller team, and Vettel beat drivers from the leading Ferrari and McLaren squads in a wet qualifying session.
The following day, Vettel converted pole into victory, becoming the youngest Grand Prix winner at that time. His performance made the Italian Grand Prix a defining weekend in his rise from Red Bull junior driver to championship contender.
Vettel’s pole record was later broken by Charles Leclerc in 2019. The 2008 result is nevertheless important because it marked Vettel’s first Formula 1 pole and his team’s first pole position. It also showed how changing weather could create opportunities beyond normal car performance.
