Which Formula 1 driver became the first back-to-back World Drivers’ Champion by winning the 1952 and 1953 titles?

The story behind the answer

Alberto Ascari became the first back-to-back Formula 1 World Drivers’ Champion by winning the 1952 and 1953 titles.

Ascari dominated both seasons for Ferrari. In 1952, he won six consecutive championship Grands Prix after missing the opening race, then secured the title with a large points advantage. In 1953, he again led Ferrari and won five races on the way to retaining his crown.

Ascari’s achievement came during Formula 1’s early years, when championship races could include different car types and scoring systems from those used today. His father, Antonio Ascari, was also a famous Grand Prix driver, but he died racing in 1925.

Juan Manuel Fangio later surpassed Ascari’s total with multiple championships, while Sebastian Vettel and other drivers also achieved consecutive titles. Ascari remains Ferrari’s first two-time Formula 1 champion.
