Which Final Fantasy writer helped create Brawl's single-player storyline?

The story behind the answer

Kazushige Nojima helped create the storyline for Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s single-player mode. That mode, The Subspace Emissary, combined platforming stages, boss battles, and cinematic scenes into a crossover adventure.

Nojima was already famous for writing scenarios for Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X, and Kingdom Hearts. Director Masahiro Sakurai asked him to help solve a difficult storytelling problem: how to give a coherent plot to a game featuring characters from many unrelated franchises.

Nojima did not work entirely alone or dictate the finished story. Sakurai explained the world and characters of Smash, while the two collaborated on organizing the scenario. The result brought Mario, Kirby, Link, Samus, Donkey Kong, Sonic, and others into a shared conflict involving the Subspace Army.

A common mix-up is crediting Tetsuya Nomura or another Final Fantasy creator. Nomura was strongly associated with Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy character design, but Nojima is the writer specifically linked to Brawl’s Subspace Emissary scenario.
