Answer
Sentimental Value
“Sentimental Value” won Film Not in the English Language at the 2026 BAFTAs.
The 2025 Norwegian-language drama was directed by Joachim Trier, who co-wrote it with Eskil Vogt. It centres on a filmmaker and his two daughters as they confront old family wounds, memory and the complicated relationship between art and personal life. Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas play the daughters, while Stellan Skarsgård plays their father.
The film premiered in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix. At the BAFTAs, it prevailed over “It Was Just an Accident,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sirât” and “The Voice of Hind Rajab.” The category is not simply a prize for films with no English dialogue; it recognises an international film whose primary language is not English, and it has existed since the early 1980s.
