Cars 2 is the second feature film in Pixar’s Cars series.

Released in 2011, Cars 2 follows Lightning McQueen as he enters the World Grand Prix, a global race organized by oil entrepreneur Miles Axlerod. The story gives a larger role to Mater, who becomes involved in an international spy adventure after being mistaken for an undercover agent.

The film expands the setting beyond Radiator Springs, visiting locations such as Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London. It therefore has a more international action-spy structure than the original Cars, which centered on a stranded racer and a small American town.

Cars 2 was followed by Cars 3 in 2017. The franchise also includes short-form productions such as Mater’s Tall Tales and Cars on the Road, but those are not feature films in the numbered series.
