Which film introduced Kai, the spirit warrior, to the Kung Fu Panda story?

The story behind the answer

Kung Fu Panda 3 introduced Kai, the spirit warrior, to the Kung Fu Panda story.

Kai is the primary antagonist of Kung Fu Panda 3. He returns from the spirit realm and attacks kung fu masters by taking their chi, converting defeated masters into jade amulets that serve him. His power threatens both the mortal world and the spirit realm.

Kai has a personal connection to Master Oogway. The film’s backstory explains that the two were once brothers-in-arms, but their relationship broke down over Kai’s desire to control chi. Oogway ultimately defeated him and banished him to the spirit realm.

Kai is separate from the villains of the first two films. Tai Lung drives the conflict in Kung Fu Panda, while Lord Shen is the central antagonist of Kung Fu Panda 2. The Chameleon becomes the major villain of Kung Fu Panda 4.
