In Kung Fu Panda 3, Kai steals chi from kung fu masters. Chi is presented as a vital life energy connected with living beings and martial-arts power in the film’s fantasy world.
Kai returns from the Spirit Realm and attacks kung fu masters, transforming them into jade amulets called jade zombies under his control. His goal is to collect enough chi to increase his strength and dominate both the mortal world and the Spirit Realm.
The film uses the spelling “chi,” although “qi” is a common transliteration in discussions of Chinese concepts. The movie’s fictional rules should not be treated as a scientific description of human energy. Oogway and Kai are both linked to the Spirit Realm, but their relationship is defined by conflict.
