Which film did J.K. Rowling co-produce and write the screenplay for in 2016?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling co-produced and wrote the screenplay for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016.

The film was released on 18 November 2016 and marked Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is set in 1926, decades before the main Harry Potter story, and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander in New York City. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt.

The title comes from Rowling’s 2001 charity companion book, which was presented as a Hogwarts textbook. The film expands that fictional textbook into a prequel-era story rather than adapting the book’s short encyclopedia-style entries.

The film began a five-film planned series, though only three films were released by 2022. Its two follow-ups are The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore, so the 2016 original should not be confused with either sequel.
