Quidditch is the fictional sport featured in J.K. Rowling’s 2001 charity companion book.
The book is titled Quidditch Through the Ages and is presented as a history of the wizarding game. Quidditch is played by two teams of seven players flying on broomsticks. Players use four balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers, and one Golden Snitch. The sport combines scoring through hoops with the Seeker’s attempt to catch the Snitch.
In the Harry Potter books, Quidditch is one of the major school activities at Hogwarts and an important part of wizarding culture. The Hogwarts houses compete in a seasonal tournament, and Harry plays as a Seeker for Gryffindor.
The companion volume was published in 2001 for Comic Relief, together with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Rowling credited the book to Kennilworthy Whisp. It should not be confused with wizard chess, a magical board game that appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
