Which fictional sport did J.K. Rowling create for witches and wizards in the Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

The fictional sport J.K. Rowling created for witches and wizards is Quidditch.

Quidditch is played on flying broomsticks by two teams of seven players. A match uses four balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers, and one Golden Snitch. The Chasers handle the Quaffle, Beaters defend their teammates and redirect Bludgers, and each Seeker pursues the Snitch.

A team earns 10 points by putting the Quaffle through one of the opposing hoops. Catching the Golden Snitch earns 150 points and usually ends the match, although the team that catches it does not automatically win if its score remains lower. Harry plays Seeker for Gryffindor at Hogwarts.

Quidditch is distinct from other magical games mentioned in the books. Gobstones is a separate tabletop game, while wizard’s chess is a magical version of chess. The real-world sport inspired by Rowling’s game was later renamed quadball by many organizations, partly to distinguish it from the fictional franchise.
