Azkaban is the fictional wizarding prison that holds Sirius Black before his escape in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
Sirius is imprisoned in Azkaban after being falsely blamed for betraying James and Lily Potter and causing the deaths of Peter Pettigrew and several Muggles. He escapes before the events of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, becoming the first known prisoner to break out of the fortress.
The prison is guarded by Dementors, creatures that feed on happiness and can leave victims emotionally devastated. Their presence makes Azkaban a symbol of fear and psychological punishment within the wizarding justice system.
Azkaban is not the same as Nurmengard, another prison associated with the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Gringotts is a wizarding bank, while the Burrow is the Weasley family home.
