Alan Sugar founded the electronics company Amstrad and later became a Dragon on Dragons' Den.
Sugar established Amstrad in 1968, initially building a business around affordable consumer electronics. The company name came from Alan Michael Sugar Trading. Amstrad became particularly well known for home computers, satellite television equipment and audio products.
Sugar joined the Dragons' Den panel in the programme's third series, replacing Simon Woodroffe. His business background made him one of the show's most recognisable investors, although his television role was separate from his ownership history at Amstrad.
A common mix-up is to associate Sugar with the technology companies founded by other Dragons. Peter Jones, for example, built Phones International Group, while Sugar's best-known original business was Amstrad.
