Which Electronic Arts founder approached John Madden about a football video game in 1984?

The story behind the answer

Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins approached John Madden about a football video game in 1984.

Hawkins founded Electronic Arts in 1982 after becoming fascinated with the idea of turning tabletop sports simulations into computer games. He had already imagined a detailed football program and wanted a respected football authority to provide credibility, strategy, and instruction. After considering other possible endorsers, he contacted Madden, who was then a retired coach and prominent broadcaster.

Hawkins and producer Joe Ybarra met Madden during a two-day Amtrak train journey. Madden was uncomfortable flying, and the trip gave the group time to discuss football tactics and the proposed simulation. Madden agreed to participate, but he demanded realism: he would not attach his name to a game that did not use 11 players per team.

That requirement created major technical challenges for 1980s home computers and delayed the project. The first game, John Madden Football, finally appeared in 1988. The series’ name therefore reflects an unusually hands-on collaboration, not merely a licensing deal. Will Wright and Sid Meier are famous game designers, but neither initiated this EA–Madden partnership.
