Alan Sugar was known for founding the British company Amstrad before joining Dragons' Den.
Sugar founded Amstrad in 1968. The name was formed from his initials, A.M.S., and the word “trading”. The company first sold consumer electronics and later became especially associated with affordable home computers, including the Amstrad CPC range.
He joined the British Dragons' Den panel as a guest Dragon in the programme’s early history. Sugar’s reputation came from building and leading a large electronics business, which made him a particularly recognisable investor for viewers interested in technology and consumer products.
Sugar is sometimes confused with the permanent Dragons because he appeared in the show’s investor environment but was not part of the original five-person launch panel. His most famous pre-television business association remains Amstrad, which was acquired by BSkyB in 2007.
