Nepal has the world’s only national flag that is not rectangular.
The flag consists of two joined triangular pennants, often described as a double pennant. Its crimson-red field is bordered in deep blue, while the upper and lower sections display a crescent moon and a sun.
The design reflects Nepal’s history and symbols. Crimson is associated with bravery and is also Nepal’s national color; blue represents peace. The sun and moon traditionally symbolize the hope that Nepal will endure as long as those celestial bodies.
Nepal’s flag is sometimes mistakenly called triangular, but it is more precisely made from two stacked triangular shapes. Its unusual geometry is defined in Nepal’s constitution, which includes a detailed construction method rather than simply specifying a conventional rectangle.
