Russia hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi.
The Games were held from 7 to 23 February 2014 in Sochi, a Russian resort city on the Black Sea. It was the first Winter Olympics hosted by Russia and the first Olympic Games held in the country since the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
Because Sochi has a mild coastal climate, many snow events took place in the nearby Caucasus Mountains at Krasnaya Polyana. Ice events and ceremonies were staged in the coastal cluster around Sochi, creating one of the most geographically distinctive Olympic layouts.
Russia finished first on the final medal table with 13 gold medals and 30 total medals, although later anti-doping investigations affected the record books and medal standings. The next Winter Olympics were held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018.
