Which country has hosted the Winter Olympics most often?

The story behind the answer

The United States has hosted the Winter Olympics more often than any other country.

American cities hosted four editions: Lake Placid in 1932, Squaw Valley in 1960, Lake Placid again in 1980, and Salt Lake City in 2002. Lake Placid is the only location to host the Winter Olympics twice.

The United States was also the first country outside Europe to stage the Winter Games, when Lake Placid hosted the 1932 Olympics. Squaw Valley’s 1960 edition was notable for introducing electronic timing and a computer-based results system.

This record concerns hosting, not medal performance. Norway, Germany, and the United States have often ranked among the strongest Winter Olympic nations, but the number of events hosted is a separate measure. The United States has not hosted a Winter Olympics since Salt Lake City 2002.
