Which country first hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948?
Answer
Switzerland
Answer
Switzerland
Switzerland was the first country to host the Winter Olympics twice, staging the Games at St. Moritz in 1928 and 1948.
St. Moritz hosted the second Winter Olympics in 1928 and then welcomed the Games again twenty years later. The 1948 edition was the first Winter Olympics after the Second World War, following the cancellation of the 1940 and 1944 Games.
Switzerland’s Alpine setting made it a natural early host for winter sports. St. Moritz remains one of the few places to stage the Winter Olympics more than once, alongside Innsbruck, Lake Placid and other repeat hosts.
The two St. Moritz Games were very different in scale. The 1928 program was small by modern standards, while the 1948 Games represented the revival of international Olympic competition after wartime disruption.
