Which country did J.K. Rowling move to in 1991 to teach English?
Answer
Portugal
Answer
Portugal
J.K. Rowling moved to Portugal in 1991 to teach English.
She relocated to Porto after completing a degree in French and Classics at the University of Exeter. In Portugal, she taught English as a foreign language and met Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes. They married in 1992 and had a daughter, Jessica, in 1993.
Rowling began writing Harry Potter before moving abroad, but the years in Portugal formed part of the period in which she continued developing the story. After her marriage ended, she returned to the United Kingdom with her daughter in 1993 and settled in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The country is sometimes confused with Scotland because Edinburgh became central to Rowling’s life and writing career. Portugal was the country where she taught English; Scotland was where she later lived while completing and publishing the early Harry Potter books.
