AT&T used the slogan “Let your fingers do the walking” for its Yellow Pages directories.
The slogan encouraged people to search printed business listings with their fingers rather than travel from shop to shop or ask an operator for information. It was usually accompanied by a distinctive walking-fingers graphic.
The phrase was created in 1962 by advertising executive Phyllis Robinson for the Bell System’s Yellow Pages. AT&T later became the principal corporate successor to the Bell System after its breakup in 1984, although Yellow Pages directories were also published by regional telephone companies and independent directory firms.
The slogan is sometimes attributed broadly to the Yellow Pages rather than to a single company. In its original major advertising use, however, it promoted the Bell System’s directory service, later associated with AT&T.
