Which soft-drink company used the slogan “It’s the Real Thing”?

The story behind the answer

Coca-Cola used the slogan “It’s the Real Thing.”

The slogan became strongly associated with Coca-Cola through its 1969 advertising campaign. It followed earlier Coca-Cola lines such as “The Pause That Refreshes” and positioned the drink as the original or authentic cola in a competitive market. The campaign’s most famous musical expression was the 1971 “Hilltop” advertisement, which featured “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke.”

Coca-Cola was invented in 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia, by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton. The Coca-Cola Company was incorporated later, in 1892, under the leadership of Asa Griggs Candler. The drink’s distinctive contour bottle was introduced in 1915.

People sometimes confuse “It’s the Real Thing” with “Open Happiness,” a later Coca-Cola slogan launched in the 2000s. Both are Coca-Cola advertising phrases, but they belong to different campaigns and eras.
