Which combined team won the men's ice hockey gold medal at the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

The Unified Team won the men's ice hockey gold medal at the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics.

The Unified Team represented several former Soviet republics competing together after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Its official designation was commonly abbreviated as EUN, from the French name Équipe unifiée.

In the final on 23 February 1992, the Unified Team defeated Canada 3–1. Czechoslovakia won the bronze medal. The tournament used a 12-team format and was the final Olympic ice hockey competition before NHL players were allowed to participate in the 1998 Games.

Russia did not compete under its own national team name at Albertville. That is why “Russia” is a tempting but incorrect answer. The Unified Team won medals in several sports at the Games, not only in ice hockey.
