Urban Meyer led the Ohio State Buckeyes to the 2014 national championship.
The 2014 season was Meyer's third year as Ohio State's head coach and the program's first in the newly reorganized Big Ten East Division. The Buckeyes finished 14–1, winning the Big Ten championship after a 59–0 defeat of Wisconsin. Their only regular-season loss came against Virginia Tech.
Ohio State earned a place in the inaugural College Football Playoff and upset Alabama 42–35 in the Sugar Bowl semifinal. The Buckeyes then defeated Oregon 42–20 in the national championship game, powered by four rushing touchdowns from Ezekiel Elliott. It was Ohio State's first national title since 2002.
This championship is sometimes confused with Jim Tressel's 2002 title, because Tressel was the previous Ohio State coach to win a national championship. Nick Saban coached Alabama, Ohio State's semifinal opponent, while Woody Hayes was the legendary Buckeyes coach who led the school to five claimed national championships from 1954 through 1968.
