Which college basketball coach is known as the 'Wizard of Westwood'?

The story behind the answer

John Wooden is the college basketball coach known as the “Wizard of Westwood.”

The nickname refers to Wooden’s extraordinary tenure at UCLA, whose campus is located in Westwood, Los Angeles. He coached the Bruins from 1948 to 1975 and built the most dominant program in college basketball history.

Wooden led UCLA to 10 NCAA championships, including seven consecutive titles from 1967 through 1973. His teams also produced an NCAA-record 88-game winning streak and four undefeated seasons. Among the players he coached were Lew Alcindor—later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar—and Bill Walton.

Wooden was more than a strategist: he emphasized fundamentals, preparation, character, and personal growth. His “Pyramid of Success” became a widely known leadership and motivational framework. Despite the magical nickname, Wooden disliked being called a wizard because he did not want his achievements portrayed as tricks or mystery.
