Which coach led the US men's basketball team to the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Mike Krzyzewski led the United States men’s basketball team to the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Known widely as “Coach K,” Krzyzewski was selected to lead Team USA during a rebuilding effort after the Americans won bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The 2008 squad, later nicknamed the “Redeem Team,” combined established stars such as Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony.

The United States went unbeaten in Beijing and defeated Spain 118–107 in the gold-medal game. The victory restored the Americans to the top of Olympic men’s basketball and began a run of Olympic titles for Krzyzewski’s teams in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Jerry Colangelo was also central to the turnaround as USA Basketball’s managing director, but he was not the team’s coach. Krzyzewski’s college identity can also cause confusion: he coached Duke for 42 seasons, yet this question concerns his international role with Team USA.
