Which coach led the Edmonton Oilers to their first Stanley Cup in 1984?

The story behind the answer

Glen Sather led the Edmonton Oilers to their first Stanley Cup in 1984.

Sather had already coached Edmonton in the World Hockey Association before the franchise joined the NHL in 1979. He remained the Oilers' head coach as the club developed a spectacular young core featuring Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, and Grant Fuhr.

Edmonton reached the 1983 Stanley Cup Final but lost to the New York Islanders. One year later, the Oilers defeated those same Islanders in five games in the 1984 Final, winning the franchise's first championship. Messier was named playoff MVP, while Gretzky served as captain and led the postseason in scoring.

A common mix-up is crediting Gretzky because of his immense influence or John Muckler because he later shared coaching responsibilities with Sather. Sather was the head coach for the 1984 championship and went on to guide Edmonton to three more Stanley Cups, in 1985, 1987, and 1988.
