Mike Ditka led the Chicago Bears to their only Super Bowl win in the 1985 season.
Ditka became the Bears’ head coach in 1982 after working as an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys. In 1985, Chicago went 15–1 in the regular season, then shut out the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams in the NFC playoffs.
The Bears defeated the New England Patriots 46–10 in Super Bowl XX on January 26, 1986. Their fearsome 46 defense, coordinated by Buddy Ryan, became the team’s signature, while players including Walter Payton, Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary and William “The Refrigerator” Perry made the club iconic.
The phrase “1985 season” can cause confusion because the Super Bowl was played in January 1986. It still belongs to the 1985 NFL season. Ditka also won Super Bowl XII as a Dallas assistant, but his Chicago title was his only championship as a head coach.
