Larry Brown is the only head coach to win both an NCAA basketball championship and an NBA championship.
Brown won the NCAA title with Kansas in 1988, completing a memorable comeback against Oklahoma in the championship game. The Jayhawks entered that final having lost to the Sooners twice during the regular season, but Danny Manning’s outstanding performance helped Kansas secure the program’s first NCAA championship under Brown.
Sixteen years later, Brown won the NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004. Detroit defeated the heavily favored Los Angeles Lakers in five games by using disciplined defense, balanced scoring, and a deep rotation rather than relying on a single dominant superstar.
The distinction is specifically about winning both titles as a head coach. Coaches such as John Wooden and Mike Krzyzewski won NCAA championships but not NBA titles, while several NBA champions never won the NCAA tournament. Brown’s unusual career bridged college and professional basketball at the highest level.
